So you’re getting a dog and know they need a lot of stuff, but with all this stuff it’s hard to sort out what is the most important and what is the most urgent. This is why we made this post to help you know the first things you need to buy for your dog. The only thing not on this list is obviously food for your dog, but we felt this was a given. We have linked some of our favorite products and just so you know we will earn a small commission if you decide to purchase through our links at no extra cost to you.
#1 – Collar
The first thing we recommend getting for your dog is a collar. We suggest you start right out of the gate with a Herm Spring prong collar. However, you can also start with a flat collar to get yourself started. We really liked the Extreme Tactical 1.5” Dog Collar with Handle from Tactipup. Overall, any collar is a must when getting a dog. This is the Herm Sprenger collar we use.
#2 – Leash
The second thing we recommend getting for your dog is a leash. We strongly recommend a 6’ biothane leash. We love Biothane leashes because they are high quality, sturdy, easy to clean, and last a long time. Getting a leash is obviously essential for taking your dog around and on walks, thus making it one of the first things you should buy. This is the leash we use.
#3 – Crate
The third thing we recommend getting for your dog is a crate. You may not want to seriously crate train your dog or use it on a regular basis, but regardless a crate is essential. Whether it’s for safe travel or a way to keep them running a muck in your home, a crate is a very important product especially early on with a dog. This is the crate we currently use with our dogs.
#4 – Bed
The fourth thing we recommend getting for your dog is a bed. We suggest getting a bed that fits perfectly in the crate you bought. This makes the crate much more enticing for your pup and comfortable to be in. We also find it to be a good idea to get a bed with a washable cover. This is the bed we use with our dogs.
#5 – Bowls
The fifth and final thing we recommend you buy right away when getting your dog is bowls. We recommend getting bowls that have a wide base and rubber on the bottom. This helps the bowls not to slide around and tip over when your dog is using them. Not to mention, any type of bowl is essential for feeding your dog and giving them water. We really like these bowls.
These are the first five things we recommend you buy when getting a dog. If you want to learn more about how we train and care for our dogs check out our website. For more products we love and use everyday check out our Amazon storefront.
